- Story Text: U.S. forces have released 19 Iraqis who were being
held in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit.
US troops released nineteen Iraqis in ousted
president Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit on Thursday
(February12). They were amongst some 500 people the U.S.
has said would only be freed if community leaders came
forward as guarantors of their conduct after their release.
The 19 Iraqis, who'd been detained by U.S. forces, were
released in Tikrit, some 150km north of Baghdad, in
accordance with an amnesty announced by U.S. Civil
Administrator Paul Bremer last month.
As they left the governorate building they were greeted
with an emotional welcome by their relatives who were
waiting outside.
The United States announced last January it would
release 500 Iraqis held as low-level security threats
during the last eight months. Some 9,000 prisoners are
being held by U.S.-led forces and many more have been
detained and released since Saddam Hussein was ousted in
last April.
The release was dependant on the condition that the
detained must renounce violence and must have someone
prominent who could vouch for them, such as a religious or
a tribal figure who will be responsible for their future
actions.
Those suspected of serious violent crimes would not be
freed.
