- Story Text: Soldiers from the U.S. Delta Battery 3rd Infantry
Division enjoyed their first hot meal for eight days in the
Iraqi desert outside of Karbala.
Thursday's (March 27, 2003) meal consisted of chily with
rice and sweetcorn for a main course and canned fruit and chocolate
pudding for desert.
Captain Ian Humphreys said he wanted to give the troops a
treat: "For our last week all we've been eating are MREs,
which is a pre-packaged meal, that really, it's the same thing
every day, almost. So what we want to do now is every once in
a while we'll have a hot meal for the troops. That way it's a
change of pace for them. Morale booster," he said.
The soldiers seemed to appreciate it. "You don't get no
better than that" and "Best in the world" they commented in
between eating their food on tables and tanks in the desert.
U.S. troops are preparing for what could be a critical
battle soon with Iraqi Republican Guards near Kerbala.
A full Iraqi brigade of some 6,000 men, including tanks,
had taken up position around the city on both sides of the
Euphrates river, U.S. officers said. Some were from the Medina
division of the elite Republican Guard, others were regular
army troops.
