- Story Text: Clashes broke out between militia loyal to rebel
Shi'ite cleric Moqtada Sadr and U.S. troops in Najaf on
Saturday.
Clashes erupted on Saturday (May 22, 2004) in the holy
city of Najaf between militia loyal to rebel Shiite cleric
Mooqtada al-Sadr and U.S. troops.
The clashes erupted in the morning near the cemetry
which is less than two kilometres (one mile) from the Imam
Ali mausoleum in the city centre.
On Friday (May 21) U.S. forces detained a top aide of
rebel Shi'ite cleric Moqtada Sadr Mohammed Tabtabai in Kufa.
Sadr, who is wanted by the coalition in connection with
last year's murder of a moderate Shiite cleric, himself
delivered the weekly sermon, as in past weeks, at the
Kufa mosque, near Najaf.
Coalition troops have been locked in furious clashes
with Sadr's militiamen since the popular leader launched an
uprising across central and southern Iraq last month.
