- Story Text: As the world focuses on the plight of more than 400
asylum-seekers stuck on a boat off the coast of Australia -
even more would-be asylum seekers have gathered on the
Indonesian island of Lombok waiting for their chance to enter
Australia for a new life.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees and
Australian police are warning that even as the Australian
government reinforces its 'get-tough' policy with the refugees
aboard a Norwegian cargo ship off Christmas Islands -
hundreds, even thousands, more asylum seekers are heading for
Australia.
Over the past 11 days, 1,500 asylum seekers have landed
along Australia's vast and remote northern coast - while 900
more are believed to be already at sea on their way to
Australia.
At least 150 more refugees are holed up in an Indonesian
Government Guest House in the town of Mataram on Lombok
island, waiting for boats to take them to Australia.
Indonesian police have said the group has no immediate
plans to travel to Australia but the issue is straining
Indonesian-Australian relations - with Australia critical of
Indonesia allowing the asylum seekers to use the massive
archipelago as a way-station on their route to the good life
in Australia.
