- Story Text: French President, Valery Giscard d'Estaing and West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt met for four and a half hours of talks on Monday night (2 September).
The two leaders refused to give any details of their discussion but Chancellor Schmidt said the results were excellent. he revealed that the two leaders had spent as much time discussing Western Europe's political future as the area's pressing economic problems.
The summitt talks are the third in as many months, since the two leaders took office.
Herr Schmidt's comments on Monday's meeting are seen by observers as an indication that the leaders agreed on the initial moves necessary if the goal of full political union of the Common Market is to be achieved by 1980.
Both Leaders are known to accept that economic stability in Europe is a necessary precondition for full political union in the area.... and Monday's talks come hard on the heels of a massive German loan to Italy to help it over its present economic difficulties.
