- Story Text: World champion runner Ana Guevara is honoured by Mexican President Vicente Fox.
Thousands of excited fans crowded into Mexico City's National Stadium on Wednesday (September 17) to honour 400-metre world champion Ana Guevara, who last month won the gold medal in Paris .
Earlier in the day, Mexican President Vicente Fox honoured Guevara at a ceremony at the Los Pinos presidential residence where the two were photographed with her gold medal.
The first Mexican woman to win a world championship title, Guevara won the 400 metre gold medal on August 27 in Paris in 48.89 seconds -- the eighth fastest time ever.
Guevara has not been beaten over that distance since finishing third in the world championship final two years ago.
Guevara, who is ranked first in the world by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), beamed with pride as fans cheered.
"As a Mexican, as a Mexican woman, as a citizen, as part of this Mexico of ours," said Guevara, "it was always my illusion, it was always my goal to reach, to fight for, to prepare for what I have today."
The twenty-six-year-old was a semi-professional basketball player until 1995. She has recently expressed an interest in competing over 800 metres. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
