around a frozen lake during the White Turf races in the
jet-set resort of St Moritz, Switzerland, part of a
traditional three day series which includes the spectacular
sight of a high-speed race between horse-drawn skiers.
Top-class horses from around the world galloped across

(February 23, 2004).
A crowd of 10,000 onlookers, gathered in the exclusive
Swiss resort to see daring jockeys compete in several races of
St Moritz White Turf championship. Races included flat course
sprints, trotting and skijoring -- a unique Ben-Hur style
race, between horse-drawn skiers on the icy oval course.
The highlight of the day was the skijoring race, in which
jockeys on skis were pulled by their horses charge around the
2,700 m circuit. Swiss jockey Jakob Broger led in the overall
standings with the horse Volta, followed home by Claudio
Caprez pulled by Akebono.
St Moritz White Turf races have been held every year since
1907 on the 1800 metre high resorts lake, which freezes over
in winter.
