- Story Text: U.S. special forces and their Kurdish allies have taken
the village of Haware in northern Iraq from Iraqi government
forces. The village is 25 km south of the Kurdish controlled
village of Kalak. Haware lies 30 km north of a road that links
the cities of Mosul and Kirkuk. The road and the two cities
are in the control of Iraqi government forces.
A Reuters Television team entering Haware on Sunday
(April 6, 2003), saw the wreckage of destroyed Iraqi army vehicles
littering the road into the village.
Some of the buildings in the village had been destroyed by
aerial bombardment by coalition aircraft. Huge bomb craters
could be seen in the centre of the village.
According to local reports, U.S. special forces and
Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers took Haware at 0700 local time
(0300 GMT) on Sunday (April 6), after the Iraqis withdrew from
the area.
About 10 U.S. special forces and two of their vehicles
were in Haware on Sunday. They soon moved out further south,
backed by some 300 Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers.
After about one hour, Iraqi forces began shelling the area
south of Haware, targeting the Peshmerga and the U.S. special
forces.
A U.S. F-14 fighter-bomber flew overhead and appeared ready to
provide air support.
Near Arbil on Sunday, a column of U.S. paratroopers were
on patrol and were seen heading south towards the Haware area.
