- Story Text: Three Haitian toddlers fly out of their
crisis-wracked country en route to Spain and adoptive
families.
As the last planes leave strife-torn
Port-au-Prince, a flight organised by the Spanish embassy
evacuated a small group of foreigners including United
Nations dependents from Haiti on Thursday (February 26, 2004).
On that flight were three little Haitian children,
being flown from their homeland to start a new life in
Spain.
Originally scheduled to leave Port-au-Prince on
Wednesday (February 25), the flight had been delayed
because the barricades on the roads prevented passengers
from making their way safely across the city. Eventually,
four Spaniards, seven Haitians, including the children
and one person each from Germany, Burundi, Bolivia and
Chile were evacuated.
The girls, all between 1-and-a-half and 3-years-of-age,
were held in the arms of adoption workers who attended to
their needs at the Toussaint L'Ouverture airport. As they
tried to comfort the little girls, they said the children
looked scared and weren't smiling much.
But for the girls, former residents of a Port-au-Prince
orphanage, the short flight to the Dominican Republic was
the start of a new life.
"A joint convoy (with the United Nations) was organised
and, thank God, they arrived at the airport today," said
Spanish Ambassador to the Dominican Republic Maria Jesus
Figa Lopez-Palop. "We synchronised that a plane would be at
the airport to pick them up and, well, here we have these
beautiful girls who have also come and who are Haitian
girls pending adoption by Spanish parents."
More than 60 people have died in the poor Caribbean
country in clashes that began on February 5 when the
rebels, a collection of gangs and former soldiers, began a
revolt by overrunning the western city of Gonaives. The
rebels have warned that an attack on the capital city of
Port-au-Prince was imminent.
