- Story Text: Christian pilgrims from the Orthodox church have been
walking the Via Dolorosa (the way of sorrows) in Jerusalem as
they retrace the route believed to have been taken by Jesus
Christ on his way to be crucified.
The route that Jesus Christ is reputed to have taken
was standardized by the Franciscans. It has fourteen sections
known as the stations of the cross.
Pilgrims, many from the Greek Orthodox church carrying
facsimile crosses or paintings, have walked along the road on
Good Friday, which is the day that they believe Jesus was
crucified before being resurrected - celebrated on Easter
Sunday.
They believe Jesus was forced to carry his own cross
through the streets of Jerusalem and was vilified by the
townspeople along the way. He continued to Calvary where he
was crucified.
The Orthodox pilgrims were the first of a number of
groups of pilgrims who walk the route on Good Friday.
There has been a downturn in the number of tourists to
the region since the flaring of tensions between Israelis and
Palestinians in September, but some Christians from other
countries made the pilgrimage nonetheless.
U.S. tourists included Lori Quick who said of the event:
"It's very rewarding to be here during Easter - I'm a
Christian from the States - and to watch the procession with
the Christ, made a lump in my throat, so it's very emotional."
Fellow U.S. tourist Rob Green expressed initial
reservations about coming to the region because of the current
political situation and daily clashes: "I was a little
apprehensive at first given the situation here but I look
around me, plenty of other people here, it's the holiest place
on earth and I didn't want to give up the opportunity of
coming here," he said.
The crowds gathered on the Via Dolorosa to follow a
staged version of Jesus Christ's journey to the place where he
is said to have been put to death by crucifixion.
