- Story Text: As the final game in the World Cup near pitting for
the first time ever Brazil against Germany, Brazilians revved
up for a long night of parties.
Brazilians prepared for a long night on Saturday (June
29) ahead of the final of the World Cup in which Brazil faces
off against Germany.
Local bars around Rio expected large crowds, most of whom
have said they will party through the night ahead of the game
early Sunday morning.
"I will stay here all night," one Rio resident said at a
small restaurant where fans were beginning to gather. "I'm
going to drink all night long and then watch the game."
On the famed Copacabana beach, workers raced to build
viewing stands where soccer fans will be able to watch the
game on a large screen and bars along the waterfront prepared
for larger crowds with bands who play Samba music in
anticipation of the game.
"It's a fact, no one will sleep tonight," another fan
said, "Everyone will go to sleep Monday night because we will
celebrate non-stop."
Brazil is going for its fifth World Cup title -- the
"Penta" as the Brazilians say in Portuguese -- and Germany is
making a bid for its fourth world championship. Since World
War Two, either the Brazilians or Germans have featured in
every final except one, although, amazingly, they have never
met in the final before.
