- Story Text: 100,000 people ran accross the Bosphorus bridge on
Sunday on the occaison of the 25th Intercontinentan Eurasia
Marathon.
The 25th Intercontinental Eurasia Marathon started
early on Sunday (October 19) in Istanbul, on the Bosphorus
bridge connecting the Asian continent to Europe.
Around 100,000 professional and non-professional
athletes competed in three different categories, the
marathon, the 15 kilometre race, and the public race
consisting of crossing the bridge into Istanbul's main
Taksim square.
The State Minister for the Sports, Mehmet Ali Sahin
started the 25-year-old race and then joined in, along with
Istanbul major Ali Mufit Gurtuna and Istanbul governor
Muammer Guler.
Many people participate in the marathon's public race
just to be able to cross the Bosphorus bridge by foot, as
this is normally forbidden.
People came with their babies, some with friends and
some even tried to picnic on the bridge, watching the
beauty of the Bosphorus below their feet. Lots of
competitors took a moment on the bridge for a photo.
There was a demonstration against the war in Iraq and
the Turkish parliament's decision to send troops, but the
protesters were quickly arrested by the police.
Ethiopia's Belay Wolashe, who won the event, said he
had worked very hard for it.
"It is fine because I won, a little humidity but it is
nice, people are very nice. I I like Turkey," Wolashi said
after the race.
Wolashe finished the race in 2.18.29, winning 20,000
U.S. dollars. The women's race went to Rimma Doubovik from
Ukraine in 2.36.49, she also won 20,000 U.S. dollars.
