- Story Text: Two more bodies found as search continues for people
swept away while crossing a river in north of Iraq on Tuesday.
The search continued on Wednesday (December 1, 2004) for
bodies of people drowned in a river in the far north of
Iraq the previous day. Two bodies were found, bringing to
seven the number recovered so far.
Dozens of people were packed on to a flat barge boat,
trying to cross a tributary of the Tigris, when a rush of
water swept downstream and overturned the barge, witnesses
told a reporter for Reuters at the scene.
Up to 40 people were swept away as they tried to cross
the swollen river, families of the victims said.
Witnesses said four people travelling on the
overcrowded barge survived.
The accident occurred near the town of Zakhu, on Iraq's
border with Turkey, about 500 km (300 miles) north of
Baghdad.
Families said the victims were mostly migrant workers
from the town of Sinjar, in northwestern Iraq, who were
travelling north to look for work.
They said the river crossing point was commonly used
but was often overcrowded since no bridges span the river
in that area.
Iraq's Interior Ministry had no immediate information
about the incident.
