- Story Text: Australia's Kira Llewellyn topped an international
field to take home the Turtle Bay Resort's World Championship
of Women's Bodyboarding last weekend (February 9-10) at the
Banzai Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii.
Five days prior to the event, Lllewellyn hit a shallow
reef in a free session and had to be transported to Kahuku
hospital. She quickly regained feeling throughout her body and
after undergoing precautionary tests, was released and allowed
to compete in the event.
Llewellyn, aged 19 and from Australia's Sunshine Coast,
was followed by Karla Costa-Taylor of Brazil in second place,
Heloise Bourroux of Guadeloupe in third and Aoi Koike of Japan
in fourth.
The Australian won every heat to take the title and 2,000
U.S. dollars.
At the start of the finals Koike, the 1998 champion, saw
her chances of victory slip away as she was penalised for
interfering with Bourroux, meaning she would only be scored on
her top two waves compared to the three that everyone else
would be allowed. Llewellyn nailed victory with just four
minutes remaining as she found a solid set wave, got
completely covered up, came out and continued towards the
inside sandbar.
The event was held over two days at the world famous
Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. A total of 59
women from Brazil, Australia, USA, Japan, Puerto Rico,
Portugal, France and South Africa took part.
The event was the first of the 2002 Global Organisation of
Bodyboarders Women's Tour. Other stops will include Teahupoo
in Tahiti; the U.S. Open in California and an unnamed event in
Australia.
