- Story Text: Residents living in the shadow of Mount Etna appear to
have been spared as rivers of lava flowing from Europe's most
active volcano slowed.
For the fourth day running on Wednesday (October 30)
Mount Etna shot out fountains of fire up to 100 metres high,
with clouds of smoke stretching as far as Africa and visible
from space.
Whilst alarm over the lava flows has diminished
somewhat, fear is rising over the threat of earthquakes which
have been rumbling through the area and left hundreds of
families homeless.
Catania, Sicily's second-largest city, which sits in
the shadow of Etna, has had to close airports and schools as
ash rains down on the city. People carry umbrellas to protect
themselves from flaming particles and surgical masks are being
handed out in an attempt to prevent respiratory problems
caused by the falling ash.
Traffic in the city has snarled-up as road conditions
become hazardous. At the local market stall-keepers have tried
to protect their goods by erecting red umbrellas which all too
quickly became black with ash.
"The really bad thing is the earthquake and the lava,
really we can live with the ash," said fourty-five-year-old
Pietro Parterniti, out shopping with his family.
"Etna is a tragedy, the dust, the eruption,
everything," added a lady passing by with her shopping.
Etna, which had its last major eruption in 1992, is
almost constantly rumbling, but experts say it's fissures act
like vents, releasing pressure at regular intervals preventing
it from building up to a massive explosion.
