- Story Text: Vehicles of all ages formed a cavalcade through London's Hyde Park on Sunday (12 October) to mark the diamond jubilee of the Earl's Court Motor Show that starts on Wednesday (15 October).
The procession gave Londoners a chance to see many of the cars due to be on the Motor Show stands. The new Jaguar XJS was in the parade and its Italian rival the Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer.
An old Silver Ghost Rolls Royce led its modern counterpart -- the GBP30,000 (about 60,000 U.S. dollar) Rolls Royce Camargue. The Silver Ghost did not COST GBP30,000 when it was new but today it is a top collector's item and worth more than the brand new Camargue. Britain's ex-world champion racing driver Stirling Moss took part in the motorcade. He drove a 1914 Mercedes Benz racer.
SYNOPSIS: An Autumn cavalcade of new and vintage cars was held in London's hyde Park on Sunday, to herald the sixtieth anniversary of the Earl's Court Motor Show. The Show opens on Wednesday.
Several manufacturers took this early opportunity of showing off their latest models in the company of their latest models in the company of their illustrious predecessors. For instance, the vintage Daimler's brand new cousin. The cavalcade gave Londoners a preview of many of the cars to be shown at Earl's Court -- among them Italy's new Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer.
Among the cars was an old Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, which in its day was the most expensive car in the world. It was followed by its modern counterpart, the Camargue, which costs thirty thousand pounds. Though the Silver Ghost cost nothing like that sum when it was new, it is now worth even more than the Camargue.
Despite the recent troubles of Britain;s major car producer, British Leyland, the firm was still able to steal most of the limelight with a nineteen thirty-eight Jaguar followed by the new Jaguar XJS.
The cavalcade ended up near Earl's Court--soon to take on its annual role as a Mecca for car lovers. Last year more than four hundred thousand people visited the show, and despite the gloomy economic climate, the organisers are confidently expecting half a million visitors this year.
