- Story Text: As Russian officials work to raise the wreckage of the
Kursk submarine, some relatives of those who died are in a
Turkish beach resort on an organised moral-boosting trip.
Millions of people had held their breath and hoped for
good news when the Russian nuclear submarine "Kursk" was
stranded deep in the cold waters of the Barents Sea last August.
But all 118 sailors on board died.
Divers later found a letter that had been written by a
sergeant as the water level rose in the vessel, showing the
world how dramatically the sailors faced death.
On Sunday (May 20) some 35 relatives of the victims arrived
in the tourist town of Antalya, on Turkey's Mediterranean
coast.
The trip, one of several organized for the relatives of the
victims, is financed by Russian and Turkish businessmen.
Twenty-one women and 14 children are now trying to keep
their morale up with the sun, the sea and historical site
visits on the eve of the salvage of the wreckage.
"The accident is not over yet, we will feel the same pain
again. We heard that the they want to lift the wreckage. So
this holiday is very important for us to keep our morale high"
said Valeria Lilutina from Siberia, who came with her 4-year
old daughter.
Lilutina said her daughter still believes that her daddy
is on board for a mission.
Irina Shoobin, who lost her husband, said she no longer
enjoys the sea.
"We used to spend most of our life at sea, the submarine
soldiers usually train in Sivastapol and Chernomory, at Black
Sea. I always loved the sea, but since the accident in
the Barents, my love for sea has been poisoned" said Shoobin.
After the accident, many such organized trips were planned
for relatives of the victims.
The Turkey trip will continue until May 27.
Russian authorities will start a three-month operation at
the end of June to raise the sunken nuclear submarine Kursk.
On Friday (May 18), a salvage firm signed a deal with
Russia to raise the sub.
