Third set he let go a little bit which I took advantage of. So for me to have such a finals is a dream. I've had a lot of praise throughout my career, now obviously very much after winning three majors out of the four. For me it's all about having to try and maintain my level of play and hopefully win another major because it's not something very normal that I did this year." 8. - Story Text: Roger Federer lifts U.S. Open trophy in New York's
Times Square.
After a near-perfect 6-0 7-6 6-0 victory over
Lleyton Hewitt in Sunday's US Open final, the Australian
Open and Wimbledon champion Roger Federer has finally
cracked the Big Apple.
The 23-year-old Swiss, rapidly establishing himself as
one of the best players in the history of the sport, had
never previously gone beyond the fourth round at Flushing
Meadows. Federer was mobbed by fans and media in New York
on Monday (September 13), the morning after his dominating
performance in the final.
"It feels fantastic to me. Even though I dominated
this year a little bit. You know its a suprise in the end
to win such big events to play such terrific tennis all the
way to the end Its just fantastic," Federer told Reuters
Television in Times Square.
"Yesterday I had the perfect start. The one I was really
hoping for. The second set was very, very tough It could
have gone either way. Third set he let go a little bit
which I took advantage of. So for me to have such a finals
is a dream. I've had a lot of praise throughout me career
now obviously very much after winning three majors out of
the four. For me its all about having to try and maintain
my level of play and hopefully win another major because
its not something very normal that I did this year."
Federer's victory made him the first man since Swede
Mats Wilander in 1988 to win three grand slams in the same
year, leading to much discussion about whether the Swiss
can match or even beat Pete Sampras's record of 14 grand
slam titles.
