- Story Text: Body believed to be of a Westerner found near Iraqi
town of Samarra and three Turkish truck drivers said to be
kidnapped north of Baghdad.
The body of a man believed to be a Westerner was
found on Thursday (September 17) near the restive town of
Samarra north of Baghdad, Iraqi police said.
Police said the corpse was bloated, suggesting the
person had been dead for some time.
Meanwhile, gunmen kidnapped three Turkish truck drivers
on a road in Dujail, 30 kilometres north of Baghdad, Iraqi
security forces said. .
According to the Iraqi National Guards the Turkish
drivers had been driving on a road leading to Tikrit city
north of Baghdad when gunmen attacked them, abducting them
and leaving their trucks on side of the road.
Foreigners, including truck drivers, have been
targeted by insurgents fighting the U.S.-backed Iraqi
government. Two Turkish truck drivers were kidnapped near
Tikrit this week. Some of the abductees have been killed.
At least five Western men -- two French journalists,
two U.S. businessmen and a British businessman -- are known
to have been taken hostage in Iraq.
The two French journalists were seized last month south
of Baghdad and there has been no word on their fate for a
week. The American and British businessmen were kidnapped
earlier on Thursday (September 16) from a house in Baghdad.
Two Italian women aid workers were also kidnapped in
Baghdad earlier this month. Australia has been
investigating a claim that two of its citizens were
kidnapped in the area.
