- Story Text: FROM WILMINGTON TO WASHINGTON, THE EAST COAST GEARS
UP FOR HURRICANE ISABEL
What began as a bright sunny day with a pleasant
breeze turned ugly, gray and windy late on Wednesday
(September 17, 2003) as Isabel made it way towards the East
coast of the U.S.
In Virginia beach, people made their way to the ocean
to catch a glimpse of the the rough surf while they still
could. Only half a half a mile inland yachtsmen and
fishermen hastily secured their boats before the storm. The
ocean is plainly visible from the marina at Virginia beach
and that is why Roger Gibson, owner of a yacht worth more
than half a million dollars, was worried.
Gibson did not have enough time to make it to a marina
further inland and could only hope for the best.
"This marina was almost full but it's almost empty
now. All the places got filled up and I didn't get to work
on time (laughing). So basically, I was tardy in doing
what I should have done.I got to hope for the best ..pray."
Less then ten percent of the hundreds of parking
spots, or 'slips' in boating terms, were vacant as most
people took there boats further inland to avoid the high
tide surge Isabel was expected to unleash on the area.
Bob Mizelle, a commercial fisherman for more than
twenty years, said it is hard to gauge what the damage to
his boat, the "Shag Nasty", would be, but said he wasn't
too worried.
"It depends on the tide surge. The wind is not as
concerning as the tide surge, you know, its hard to say,
you know, you just don't know. It depends on where that
hurricane hits, how much surge we getyou know, it just
depends, 50 to 75 miles makes a big difference as far as
the eye pushing the water through the inlet, making come up
higher, "he said.
Charter Turpin owns the restaurant at the Marina
and a yacht. He was worried about both of them.
"The Atlantic ocean is right there , so she will come
right on down 'Rudee' and Virginia beach and be the first
one it hits but hopefully we will be ok though."
He said he thought the yacht would fare better then the
restaurant, basing that belief on past experience.
" The tidal surge is the main thing we are worried about,
flood level..( Hurricane) Gloria in 1985 I believe, 8 foot,
got up to the bar and then she started to recede at that
point, so we are keeping our fingers crossed."
And while the boats will remain in the Marina the
owners plan on going inland.
