- Story Text: Rescue teams were continuing to dig in the rubble for
survivors of the attack on New York's World Trade Center after
heavy rains had temporarily stalled search efforts.
Fireman and rescue workers on Friday (September 14)
continued to sort through the rubble of World Trade Center
buildings that were destroyed on Tuesday (September 11).
The grim recovery effort by thousands of workers for any
possible survivors, bodies and evidence was slowed by heavy
rain that started late on Thursday night and continued into on
Friday morning.
Ground Zero is the name by which the site on which the
twin towers of the World Trade Center stood before being hit
by hijacked planes on Tuesday
City officials did not have an update of the number of
missing immediately available, but they said between 4,200 and
4,300 people had been treated in New York and New Jersey
hospitals. Giuliani said on Thursday the list of those missing
numbered 4,763, bodies recovered numbered 184 and 35 victims
have been identified.
Officials at Bellevue Hospital said no victims of the
attack had been brought in for about 36 hours.
U.S. President George Bush travelled from Washington
D.C. to New York on Friday to boost the morale of recovery
workers and the city as a whole.
