- Story Text: Brussels has held its 15th annual body painting
championships at the weekend, as 15 teams slaved with paints
and airbrushes for an afternoon to turn models into vampires,
monsters and ghouls.
The competition is the high point of the annual Brussels
festival of fantasy film which is held in the Belgian
capital.
This year's event brought together 15 competitors from
Belgium, France, Austria, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands
and the Ukraine.
Artists took an average of three hours to paint and
airbrush designs onto the bodies of models.
The event is a forum for professional makeup artists to
show off their skills and compete for recognition in the
highly competitive field of make-up for fantasy films.
The first prize was won by Belgium's Lionel Le, with a
design called Geisha Samurai. The creation tries to convey the
impression of a futurist samurai warrior -- carrying the
traditional Japanese sword and a blade embedded in her arm.
Many of the designs are painted on with air brushes to
obtain an even and graded effect. But the final touches are
almost always put on by a careful hand wielding a paintbrush.
Like the mayfly which only lives for one day, the
creations on show in Brussels survived only a few hours, to be
washed away at the end of the event.
