- Story Text: Members of the Iraqi National Assembly have
unanimously rejected the Security Council resolution 1441 and
reiterated their support for President Saddam Hussein.
Iraq's parliamentary speaker Saadoun Hammadi said on
Monday (November 11) a new U.N. resolution to disarm Iraq was
"provocative, deceitful and a preamble for war".
Hammadi was speaking at the opening session of an
emergency session of parliament to decide on a tough U.N.
resolution demanding Baghdad disarm or face possible military
action.
"This U.N. resolution looks for a pretext (for war) and
not for a comprehensive solution. It seeks to create crises
rather than cooperation and paves the way for aggression
rather than for peace," he said.
"This resolution violates international law and the
sovereignty of this country. It shows blatantly the ill
intentions of the U.S. administration," he added.
The 250-seat parliament opened its session just after 7:00
p.m. (1600 GMT) in response to a call by President Saddam
Hussein to decide on the resolution, adopted unanimously by
the U.N. Security Council on Friday.
"This resolution with all its texts has many provocative
procedures against this country. This resolution has many
impossible requirements that cannot be implemented and it has
many lies," he added.
Iraq has until November 15 to agree to the resolution to
allow U.N. arms experts unhindered access to sites suspected
of producing weapons of mass destruction or face "serious
consequences".
Speaking after the assembly meeting, Hammadi said that
the Assembly authorised the leadership to adopt "any measures
it sees proper to protect the country and defend it, the
Assembly's rejection for the resolution will remain up to the
leadership and we are with any measure or decision taken by it
whatever it is."
Other Members of Parliament criticized the U.N.
resolution.
MP Abu As-Soof said it was not a resolution, but a warning
actually.
"It is undignified it is against our sovereignty," he
said.
I MP Dr Mohammed Kadhim said the resolution gave America the
green light to attack Iraq "and allows America to interfere in
(Iraq's) internal affairs."
