- Story Text: Hot weather in the Russian capital has hit Moscow,
nearly breaking a 64-year-old record for the longest July
heatwave while in Turkey animals in the zoo are having to be
sprayed with cooling hoses of water because of the unusual 43C
temperatures.
As the heatwave continues Muscovites are seeking
relief by taking the plunge in Moscow's rivers and fountains.
The city's central Manezh square just outside the Kremlin was
crowded with people trying to cool down under the jets of
water. Children in bathing suits dived and swam in the
fountains, while adults preferred to be cooled by the spray or
just soaked their feet.
But many Muscovites and tourists find this unusually hot
weather enjoyable.
"I like heat, I don't mind this weather," said Svetlana,
who came to Moscow as a tourist from Siberia.
The heatwave which has lasted in Moscow for nearly two
weeks is about to break a 64-year-old record for the longest
July heat wave. If the high temperatures continue for one more
day the record will be broken.
And it's not the only one. Tuesday's (July 23) temperature
peaked at 32.5C. The record temperature for July 23, which has
stood since 1885 is only a little higher at 32.8C. The
forecast for the coming weekend promises day temperatures as
high as 33-35C.
For the beer industry the heatwave has been good news.
Instead of drinking plenty of water many prefer a bottle of
cold beer. Beer and ice-cream stands were busy serving
numerous clients. Although levels of beer consumption in
Moscow are always quite high during summer months, the
sweltering heat is expected to push figures even higher.
But some people just like to swim in the river or lie in
the sun.
At the zoo in Diyarbakir, bears, dogs, birds and monkeys
are cooled by their keepers spraying them with water. The
keepers believe that the only way to keep the animals happy is
to spray them every hour.
"They (animals) sometimes refuse to eat because of the hot
weather, so we spray them with water," says Abdulkadir (ab-dul
ca-dir) Kayacan (Ca-ya-djan) in front of one of the cages.
