- Story Text: The manager of Yugoslavia's opposition block has said
the opposition must fulfil the will of the people to elect a
new president in the first round of the elections.
Yugoslav opposition supporters on Monday (September
25) afternoon stressed the importance of not allowing the
elections to run into a second round and said conflicting
results quoted by Milosevic's party were suspicious.
Zoran Djindjic, leader of the Democratic party and manager
of the Democratic opposition of Serbia (DOS) said the
opposition had their own results showing a secure lead for
their candidate Vojislav Kostunica.
The main opposition bloc said earlier that, based on the
results from half of Yugoslavia's polling stations, Kostunica
had won 55 percent of the vote and Milosevic 34 percent,
putting the opposition leader on track for a first round
victory.
But Slobodan Milosevic's Socialist Party said the Yugoslav
president had 45 percent of the votes counted so far in
Sundays election, compared with 40 percent for his main
challenger Vojislav Kostunica.
"What Socialists are claiming might be true because they
are counting only votes from polling stations where Milosevic
won", Djindjic said. "We have to to fulfil the will of the
people and it seems that a second round is not what our voters
want."
Gorica Gajevic, secretary general of the ruling socialist
party, told a news conference the figures were based on 37
percent of the vote and put a first round victory in sight,
although a colleague from an allied party said a second round
might have to be held.
The first official results are not expected until Tuesday.
Under Yugoslavia's election rules, if none of the
candidates wins more than half the vote in the first round, a
runoff vote is held within 15 days between the two leading
candidates.
