- Story Text: Surgeons struggle to save lives of wounded from
Russian school hostage ordeal.
Russia's latest hostage crisis ends and the battle
for dozens - perhaps hundreds - of lives is now being
played out in the operating rooms of local hospitals.
Wounded hostages were rushed to field tents and
hospitals by private cars and ambulance at the end of the
three day crisis in Beslan, southern Russia, where as many
as 1,000 hostages might have been held.
Russian troops stormed a school on Friday, blaming
Chechen hostage-takers for the bloody shoot-out in which
more than 200 people died.
Official details and figures fluctuated amid the
confusion and carnage in Beslan in the North Ossetia region
bordering troubled Chechnya, where Moscow has faced a
decade-old revolt.
The Emergencies Ministry said 704 people, including 259
children, were in hospital. Many of the wounded were being
treated in mobile hospitals set up by authorities.
Doctors said the number of wounded was far more than
they had anticipated. They said that the wounded were
coming mostly with shrapnel injuries, bullet wounds and
severe burns. The conditions of the wounded are most
certainly complicated by the fact that they had received
little if any food or water for the entire period of
captivity.
