- Story Text: U.S. forces pounded suspected guerrilla positions
around Baghdad.
Loud explosions reverberated across Baghdad late on
Friday as U.S. forces pounded suspected guerrilla positions
around the Iraqi capital.
"That is the United States military," a U.S. army
spokeswoman said when asked about the blasts.
The bombardment included mortar rounds and artillery
fire, and C-130 and A-10 aircraft could be heard droning
overhead.
Over the past two months, the U.S. military has mounted
several night-time bombardments of suspected guerrilla
positions in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq.
The operations were part of a tougher U.S. strategy in
response to guerrilla attacks. Since the invasion of Iraq
in March, 328 U.S. soldiers have been killed in action, 213
of them in guerrilla attacks since major combat was
declared over on May 1.
