- Story Text: Top government officials and business leaders from
throughout Latin America gathered at the historic Biltmore
Hotel for a two-day summit covering issues important to the
region.
The offiicals gathered in Miami to discuss economic,
political and policy issues important to the Latin American
region in the Miami Herald sponsored Americas Conference on
Monday (October 14).
The President of Ecuador, Eduardo Noboa, kicked off the
event by giving the opening speech on his 2-year old
experiment with dollarization, which he deems as highly
successful. Noboa emphasized that other Latin American
countries should emulate Ecuador and follow suit.
Two Argentine presidential candidates and the Argentine
Foreign Minister, Carlos Rauckauf debated on what the future
holds for troubled Argentina. Rauckaf blamed G-7 countries
for much of the corruption that has plagued Latin America,
while presidential candidates Ricardo Lopez Murphy and Adolfo
Rodriguez Saa spoke about reform and creating conditions to
attract business to Argentina.
While the candidates debated over the future of their
country, Argentina's finance minister, Guillermo Nelson was
meeting with IMF officials to edge out a deal that could
stretch out payments on nearly $11 billion in loans to
Argentina, according to Argentine government officials.
The President of Peru, Alejandro Toledo spoke at length
about his poor upbringing in Peru and said he wants to invest
more on health and education than in the purchasing of
weapons. He said that despite his accomplishments, his
popularity has fallen. He added that he will not spend more
money to increase his approval rating.
The President of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe is scheduled to
give the key note address tomorrow via live teleconference
from Colombia.
