- Story Text: Preparations for the Paris Air Show are in full swing
at Le Bourget airport just outside the French capital.
Moderate size aircraft are also on exhibit in various public
locations in Paris.
Engineers, pilots and technicians from around the
world are working at the Paris Bourget airport, in preparation
for the International Paris Air Show which will open next
Saturday (16 June). At classic tourist spots in the capital,
like the Concorde Plaza and the Trocadero, small size aircraft
and reproductions of Arianne rockets and an Airbus model have
also been put on display in the open air.
Over 270,000 people are expected to attend the week-long
event at Le Bourget. The biennial show is the most important
event concerning the aeronautical and space world -- from the
airframe manufacturers to the equipment suppliers. Created in
1909, it is also the oldest aeronautical show of the world.
"This is one of the premier airshows in the world, so
anyone who works in aviation understands what a huge deal this
really is and what an honour it is for us to come to it",
American Lieutenant Colonel Larry Keem told Reuters Television
sitting at the cockpit of the C17, an oversized cargo aircraft
which specializes in short field operations.
More than 1700 exhibitors have already confirmed their
attendance to the show, representing 43 countries. Over 200
aircraft will be exhibited, including the jewels in the
American, European and Russian Air Forces. The very latest
models in civil aviation will also be attending - like the A
340-600 Airbus and the 737-900 Boeing, and some reflecting the
last trend of the Aeronautical and Space Industries - like the
recoverable stage of the Baikal rocket, the top of Ariane IV
and V, and various airships.
Some of the special attractions are expected to be the
Global Hawk, an American endurance plane without a pilot which
is the size of a business jet; the B2 strategic stealth
bomber, undetectable by radar, which was recently used in
Kosovo; the Boeing B 737-900, the longest aircraft in its
generation; the European Airbus A 340-600; the Ukranian-built
Antonov 225, the world's biggest carrier which can transport
250 tonnes of cargo; and a life-size model displaying the
first elements of the A380 Airbus, the biggest carrier in the
world which is now under construction and will be able to
carry up to 800 passengers.
Famous historical aircraft, a lot of acrobatic planes of
different types and parachutists will liven up the sky of the
Paris Air Show starting next Saturday (June 14).
