- Story Text: INTRO: Serbs who must leave the Sarajevo suburb of Grbavica by Tuesday are making sure the Moslems who move in will gain as little as possible while Mostar, the pivot point of the Bosnian Federation, remains a city bitterly divided between Moslems and Croats.
Fires raged out of control in the Serb Sarajevo suburb of Grbavica overnight (Saturday-Sunday, March 16/17) with fire crews from the government side of the city refusing to fight the outbreaks.
The Serb population continues to flood out of the suburb before Tuesday's deadline for the reunification of the city.
As they leave they are torching their homes so that the Moslems across the river gain little from taking the area.
Firefighters from Sarajevo have refused to go into Grbavica for fear of attack from the departing Serbs.
IFOR (Implementation Force) troops and international policemen do what they can but on most occasions can only stand and watch the homes burn.
On Saturday night Italian soldiers helped lead a woman and her dog to safety. She was living next door to an apartment that was set ablaze by neighbours.
Ethnic tension in the Bosnian city of Mostar reached new heights on Sunday when Moslem policemen threw a barricade across a road leading into the divided city's eastern sector.
Their action was in apparent retaliation for a Moslem-Croat standoff on Saturday when Croat authorities prevented Moslems from travelling out of the city to make religious observances.
On Sunday, international police and IFOR (Implementation Force) units looked on as angry Moslem policemen established the barricade across a road leading into mainly Moslem east Mostar. A line of Croat trucks was unable to pass.
