- Story Text: Sporting a 130 pound deep sea diving suit, Lloyd Scott
crossed the finish line of the New York City Marathon five
days after the start of the race. His march through the
city's boroughs raised money for New York fire-fighters and
the British charity, Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood.
Ready to take a rest from his marathon march, Lloyd
Scott stopped Thursday (November 7) to spend the night with
some hospitable New York fire-fighters. The break was a
welcome one for Scott who had spent the past four days
trudging along the route of the New York City Marathon.
Happily for Scott, however, an end was in sight. Friday
afternoon (November 8) he entered the home stretch at Central
Park. Having walked 26.2 miles, Scott crossed the finish line
cheered on by spectators and surrounded by the press.
"It's fantastic. A magnificent reception at the finish
which I've had all the way around," said Scott.
Undoubtedly the slowest racer, Scott bore his heavy burden
to help the two charities closest to him - the Uniformed
Fire-fighters Association and the British charity Cancer and
Leukaemia in Children.
"There were moments when I was sort of down and it was a
real struggle to keep going," said Scott, "but when I think of
the cause that I was doing it for - CLIC is Cancer and
Leukaemia in Childhood and the New York fire-fighters they've
got a scholarship fund so that the children of those that died
last year can go on and get a real proper education - just
those sort of causes, raising money, raising the awareness of
those charities, that's really what kept me going, what kept
me driving on."
And his race did not go unnoticed. Spectators like
Barbara Neal came out to watch the final march.
She said, "Well, somebody just told me that he lost about
10 pounds while he did it, and I don't mean English pounds, I
mean weight pounds. And I thought I need to get one of those
suits."
This isn't the first race Scott has dressed up for,
either. He recently finished a marathon in London sporting
his diver's gear that took him five days to complete. The big
question now is whether Scott will suit-up again. With a
twinkle in his eye, Scott confessed that he would think about
it.
