- Story Text: Thousands of Orthodox Greek and Armenian Christians
have begun celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ in
Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre, the church which Christians
believe is the site where Jesus rose from the dead.
Christian began celebrating Orthodox Easter in Jerusalem
on Saturday (April 26, 2003) following the appearance of
the 'light' which symbolises the resurrection of Jesus.
Orthodox Christians gathered at the church of the Holy
Sepulchre in the Old City, praying and cheering, during the
Easter resurrection ceremony symbolising Jesus' rising from
the dead.
Israeli police said that they would restrict the amount of
Christian pilgrims into the church for security reasons.
The number of participants permitted to attend was
restricted to 3,000.
Attendance by Christian pilgrims from abroad at the annual
event has dropped significantly since the start of the
Palestinian uprising in September 2000.
Palestinian Christians from the West Bank have also
attended in lower numbers, due to Israeli imposed closure on
Palestinian areas.
Israel says the closure is necessary to prevent attacks on
Israel but Palestinians say it is collective punishment.
