- Story Text: An Egyptian hostage in Iraq has been released.
Egyptian Charge d'Affaires in Baghdad Farouq Mabrouk
confirmed on Tuesday (September 28) the release of one of
six Egyptian telecoms workers. He said others would be
released shortly.
"As you know there are two groups. Four were kidnapped
on Wednesday (September 22) and two were kidnapped on
Thursday (September 23). As regards the four, one of them
was released and the three others will be freed now or
probably they have been freed. And we are still making
contacts regarding the other two," Mabrouk told reporters
at the Egyptian embassy in Baghdad.
Earlier, Al-Jazeera Television said that an Egyptian
and two Iraqis kidnapped a few days ago had been freed late
on Monday (September 27) and quoted an Egyptian diplomatic
source in Baghdad as saying the remaining five Egyptian
telecoms workers would also be released.
Al Jazeera television did not say when the five
Egyptian telecoms workers for the Iraqi unit of Egypt-based
Orascom Telecom would be freed, but it named the Egyptian
reportedly freed as Alaa Maqaar.
Mabrouk ruled out any political motives behind the
kidnapping of the Egyptian workers.
"The group, we think that these groups have financial
motives and not political ones. Any effort in this regard
(releasing the kidnapped) is appreciated because this a
humanitarian ordeal for the kidnapped and to their
families. They are here to offer service to the Iraqi
people and to reconstruct Iraq."
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit, asked by
Canada's CBC television about reports the kidnappers were
demanding a ransom, said Cairo had not identified the
kidnappers or had contact with them.
