- Story Text: Well-wishers greeted the arrival of an Iraqi girl in
Brussels for treatment of wounds she suffered during an
explosion in Iraq.
On April 6, 2003, exactly two weeks before her
thirteenth birthday, Hiba Kassim was seriously wounded
during the bombing of a civilian area in Baghdad.
A Belgian NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) brought
14-year old Hiba Kassim from Iraq to Brussels on Wednesday
(June 2) to offer her medical treatment. She was received
by dozens of well-wishers at Brussels International
Airport, who greeted her with flowers and stuffed animals.
NGO "Health Now" claims that Hiba was wounded by
cluster bombs dropped by a U.S. warplane.
Several members of her neighbourhood and family where
also injured or killed.
"There was a big explosion, which killed many people,
and I lost a member of my family. My brother was injured.
They took him to the hospital, on a day like today and he
died. And then they took me to the hospital, they treated
me and I stayed in the hospital four months", the young
girl told reporters.
Hiba's left leg was maimed in the explosion. She can
only walk on crutches.
Surgeons are confident that medical treatment during
her stay in Belgium will enable her to regain the ability
to walk.
After speaking to reporters the girl was taken to the
northern Belgian city of Ghent, where she will be treated.
