- Story Text: Port activity at the southeastern port of Iskenderun
continued on Sunday, despite no agreement having been reached
with the Turkish government to let U.S. troops offload onto
Turkish soil.
U.S. military vehicles and equipment continue to be
moved from the Mediterranean port of Iskenderun. A 27 wagon
open train carrying U.S. equipment left the port on Saturday
(March 15) evening, heading for the town of Mardin in the
southeast, closer to the Iraqi border. This is the first time
a train has been used to transport American equipment.
On Sunday (March 16), a convoy of more than 100 military
vehicles left the port driven by American soldiers.
Previously, Turkish trucks and drivers had been used to drive
the equipment up to Mardin.
A ship carrying one of the biggest loads of U.S. equipment
arrived at the port on Saturday evening. More than 700
vehicles were stacked on board. Most have been unloaded at the
port and await onward shipment. Not all the equipment has been
unloaded from the ship, as Turkish port authorities say the
Americans had been transporting more equipment than had
actually been declared. It is not clear what this additional
equipment is.
Ships carrying U.S. soldiers from the Fourth Infantry
Brigade are still waiting off the Turkish coast in
anticipation of an agreement being reached between the Turkish
and U.S. governments.
