- Story Text: Two planes with relief goods supplied by the German Red
Cross have left for the Pakistani city of Peshawar, near the
eastern Afghan border.
Two Russian Ilyushin planes were loaded with 900 tents,
some 10,000 blankets and a complete field hospital on Thursday
(October 11) at Cologne-Bonn airport.
The first two relief flights from the German Red Cross
were destined for Peshawar in Pakistan before being taken to
Afghanistan.
The first plane carried a total of 900 tents, almost
10,000 blankets and 500
items of cooking equipment. The second plane carried an entire
field hospital complete with two operating theatres, an x-ray
machine and one hundred beds.
The goods are worth some 2.5 million German marks (1.15
million U.S. dollars) and weigh 90 tons.
The first plane was due to land early morning in Peshawar
to be onwardly transported
to Afghanistan as quickly as possible.
The relief operation is designed to help avoid a
humanitarian disaster as hundreds of thousands of ill-fed
Afghans have fled the cities or are gathered at border camps.
A Red Cross spokeswoman said the goods would reach "the
poorest of the poor."
