- Story Text: Conservative, Edmund Stoiber continues his campaign to
win power in Germany, taking his case for voter support to the
German military camp at Prizren in Yugoslavia on Wednesday.
European financial market players want conservative
Edmund Stoiber to win Germany's September election and expect
the euro to strengthen and German share prices to rise if he
does, according to a Reuters poll.
Investment fund managers, equity analysts and bank
economists said a conservative victory over Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder's Social Democrats would lead to stronger economic
growth and more effective reforms of Germany's job market.
The conservatives lead the Social Democrats in opinion
polls which indicate the most likely outcome of the September
22 election will be a coalition of conservatives and liberal
Free Democrats, ousting the alliance of Social Democrats and
Greens.
But Stoiber, on a two day visit to Kosovo, is taking
nothing for granted, canvassing support wherever there is a
potential German vote to be had, even in the military base at
Prizren.
On Thursday he is scheduled to visit local churches and a
mosque in Prizren, where the Germans are headquartered as part
of the UN's multi national brigades south, before flying back
to Pristina for meetings with the Kosovan president and the UN
administrator for Kosovo.
