- Story Text: While Parisians were delighted to find their rooftops
covered with snow following a rare fall of snow on Saturday,
passengers at Charles de Gaulle Airport were halted for
several hours or even for the night,as heavy snow combined
with strong winds prevented most of the planes to take off.
Most passengers at Charles de Gaulle Airport were
halted for several hours on Sunday (January 5) after a snow
storm prevented most planes to take off.
Airports were affected, with delays of up to three hours
and with a number of cancellations. Some travellers spent
Saturday's night (January 4) in airports.
Samira, a passenger who was supposed to leave for Dakar on
Saturday (January 4) complained about the lack of organisation
in Paris airports.
"When it snows, they (airport maintenance) do not have any
equipment ready to clean up the tarmac. In some countries such
as Canada or Russia, it is planned in advance. How, do they
manage to travel in those countries ?", she said before
boarding.
Media criticised forecasters for not issuing a warning
about the snow -of which more has been forecast in the
southwest.
Icy roads and treacherous motorway blizzards led to
numerous accidents, including two major pile-ups involving
some 40 cars, as hordes of holidaymakers returned from Alpine
ski resorts.
Some 15,000 motorists were blocked in traffic jams that
stretched up to 160 km (100 miles) out of Paris.
