- Story Text: The President of the ICRC (International Committee of
the Red Cross) Jakob Kellenberger has arrived in Baghdad to
assess the aid needs of the Iraqi people and discuss the role
of the organisation with U.S. administrator Jay Garner.
During a visit to a mental hospital that was looted soon
after the fall of Baghdad, Kellenberger said he was shocked by
the damage and the pain caused to patients.
ICRC president Jakob Kellenberger arrived in Baghdad on
Monday (May 5) to assess the security situation and aid
requirements ahead of a planned airlift of medical supplies.
Kellenberg visited the ICRC-supported Al Rashad mental
hospital which was looted and damaged soon after the fall of
Baghdad when the city collapsed into chaos and lawlessness.
"I find it really terribly sad to see the effects of looting
and it goes far beyond what I thought to be possible it is
very sad", he said after touring the hospital.
Kellenberg also plans to vist ORHA administrator Jay Garner
to discuss security for such institutions after U.S. forces
said they could not provide assurances they would stop looters
from returning to the building.
Kellenberg also attended a memorial ceremony for Vatche
Arslanian, an ICRC delegate killed on April 8 during the
fighting in Baghdad.
There are several ICRC offices in Iraq including Basra to
the south, Erbil, Dohuk and Sulaymaniya to the north.
