- Story Text: Twenty-one-year-old author Christopher Paolini releases his second best-selling novel, "Eldest".
Move over Harry Potter, another teen magician takes the spotlight!
Christopher Paolini's "Eldest," the tale of a magically gifted
farm-boy Eragon and his dragon Saphira, has claimed the status as the current
number-one selling book.
"Eldest" is the second novel in Paolini's
"inheritance" trilogy which follows Eragon and his dragon through
bloody battles. Paolini, a home-schooled country boy who daydreamed of
sword-fights, spells and rescuing beautiful elves, wrote down his fantasies at
the age of 15 and sold 2.5 million copies of his first book
"Eragon."
Now at age 21, Paolini said he had to let his hero grow; the character
that was once based on him, now needed to develop as a young man.
"I found that as I wrote the story, and as Eragon experienced all
these things that I personally have not experienced, unfortunately, such as
fighting monsters and riding dragons and rescuing beautiful elves, Eragon
became very much his own character," Paolini said.
In "Eldest," the landscape, customs and creatures in the
books are described in intricate detail. In addition, Paolini invented three
languages, including one based on old Norse. He even studied linguistics to
make his languages as authentic as possible.
Paolini said that he is most proud of his dwarf language; an
intricate, almost fully developed tongue.
"If I had a chance to actually go into the land of Alagaesia,
where Eragon lives, I would go to the dwarfs, I would live with the dwarfs and
I would write dwarf opera because their language has such a great sound,"
he said.
Paolini's parents self-published "Eragon" and took him on a
tour of schools where he dressed up in medieval costume to promote the book.
Afterwards, "Eragon" caught the eye of publishing giant Random House
who signed the young author for all three segments of the mystical
trilogy.
Most of Paolini's fans are young teens who relate to the story's
coming-of-age theme.
For 14-year-old Jonathan Robles, it is difficult to believe that such a
young man can be an author. "I didn't think people that age could write
a good novel like that. He must be a real smart guy," said Robles.
Many fans are well-versed in Paolini's world, as well as the fictional
world of other popular series like "Harry Potter" and "The Lord
of the Rings." But, as Alec Meade pointed out, Paolini's books are in a
class of their own. "I really like the way with the magic and stuff, how
it's not just like say a couple words and cast a spell. He created a way
where you have to use strength and depend on stuff," he said.
A movie adaptation of the series has already began in Hungary,
featuring a noteworthy cast including Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich. As for
Paolini, he said he has not yet started to write the third novel of the
series, and does not know what he will do after he finishes that; with a
well-suited career already in his hands, he may just consider going to
college.
