- Story Text: March of silence takes place in Poland following the
accidental killing of a man in clashes with police.
Close to 5,000 people marched through the streets of
Lodz in Poland on Monday (May 10) to express solidarity
with the victims of tragic clashes with police during a
student party on Saturday (May 8).
The clashes erupted when a band of football fans went
rampant on an annual student party.
Police mistakenly used live ammunition instead of
rubber bullets to quell the riot, killing one man and
severely injuring two more people, including a girl who was
subsequently diagnosed as clinically dead.
Several more people were left slightly wounded.
The march began at the beginning of Piotrkowska Street
- the main boardwalk of Lodz.
It was led by representatives of city authorities and
politicians. Students of local universities were in the
majority, protesting against police violence and demanding
a right to a safe existence.
The silent protest ended with mass in the Lodz
Cathedral, where members of the victims' families prayed
for those who died and for those who were severely wounded.
The incident over the weekend sparked a broad reaction.
Lodz Police Chief Inspector Jacek Staniecki has
resigned and politicians have called on changing procedures
of engagement by the police in similar situations.
