- Story Text: With the communist forces tightening their grip on Phnom Penh, the French embassy has urged and supervised the evacuation of its nationals from the capital.
About 150 French citizens, including seven members of the embassy staff, left for Bangkok on Monday (17 March) on board two French air force evacuation flights. The bulk of the evacuees were businessmen, teachers and citizens holding French passports.
The evacuation of the embassy personnel meant the embassy was being downgraded to consular level.
Other signs of the deteriorating situation in Phnom Penh are evident following the decision by the United States Embassy to cut back on one of its largest relief agencies in the Khmer Republic ... the Catholic Relief Services. Most of the Agency's personnel have been evacuated.
