- Story Text: Ceremonies marking the March of the Living began in
Krakow and Warsaw.
About 3,000 people gathered in front of the monument
of "Warsaw Ghetto Heroes" on Wednesday (May 4, 2005) in
Warsaw. Most of them were teenagers from Israel who came to
Poland to learn about Nazi German atrocities performed on
their ancestors.
Around 5000 thousand residents of Krakow and
participants of the "March of the Living" from all around
the world celebrated a concert on Wednesday (May 4th) in
memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The ceremony was
held in Szeroka Street, in the center of the old Jewish
district of Krakow. A multimedia presentation with pictures
of survivors brought back the horrifying reality of Nazi
genocide.
"Humanity in total has to be aware that regimes like
Saddam Hussein or North Korea, and what happened before
(Holocaust), we cannot allow this to be forgotten" said
Tzvi Schreier, a teacher from Israel who will take part in
Thursday's march.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will take part in
the commemorative march on Thursday (May 5), a trip his
aides say will symbolise steadfastness in the face of
rising anti-Semitism.
He will join Polish leaders and an estimated 20,000
people from around the world in the annual "March of the
Living" between the former Auschwitz and Birkenau death
camps, honouring 6 million Jews killed by the Nazi genocide
during World War Two.
The ceremonial walk along the 3 km (1.9 mile) track
through the German Nazi-built complex, expected to be the
largest ever, coincides with the 60th anniversary of the
camps' liberation.
Around 3 million of Poland's 3.5 million Jews were
killed during the Holocaust. About 4 million European Jews
in total were killed in the six death camps on occupied
Polish soil.
