- Story Text: Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the wife of Malaysia's detained
former finance minister Anwar Ibrahim, has read a statement on
his behalf, denouncing the use of force by the police to break
up anti-government protests and renewed his call for Prime
Minister Mahathir Mohamad to resign.
Wan Azizah read out the statement written by Anwar to
a group of journalists at her house on Tuesday (October 27).
It was Anwar's first announcement since protesters and riot
police clashed on Saturday. The statement condemned police
violence against demonstrators.
Twelve protesters and two policemen were injured in the
clashes, which took place in a predominantly Malay
neighbourhood.Police arrested at least 241 people.
Anwar said Mahathir and federal police chief Abdul Rahim
Noor should stop "wanton beatings" and arrests of the people.
Anwar repeated his demand for an end to Mahathir's 17-year
rule."Mahathir must accept the fact, hear the grievances of
the people, of his own people, the Malaysian people,
Mahathir's people, and withdraw from the scene in an
honourable manner," he said.
Anwar is in police custody awaiting trial on 10 charges of
corruption and sexual misconduct. He has pleaded not guilty to
all of the charges, and his trial begins on Monday.
Mahathir has said his former deputy is morally unfit for
office.
