- Story Text: In a major step towards saving the lives of millions of
children around the world, the Global Alliance for Vaccines
and Immunization or GAVI has begun the first ever global
schedule of vaccine delivery to Mozambique.
The lucky recipients of this pilot project are the
inhabitants of Boane, a sleepy town 45 kilometers outside the
capital, Maputo. It was chosen out of a number of other
locations worldwide due to the varying number and types of
cases of childhood diseases that it experiences annually.
Mozambique has one of the highest rates of child mortality in
the world with 146 out of 1000 children dying before their
first birthday.
The vaccines, worth an estimated 750-million dollars and
donated free of charge by billionaire Microsoft owner,
Bill Gates, were personally delivered and distributed by his
father accompanied by Senior UN officials.
Bill Gates Senior, who was taken for a tour of the clinic
before personally witnessing the very first vaccines to
immunize children against diptheria, tetanus, whooping
cough and hepatitis B.
"It will be a great deal of work to get these vaccines to
all of the children of Mozambique but we know there's a
strong commitment to make this happen," he said, adding that
the efforts of people here and in similar places around this
country would save the lives of thousands of children."
According to statistics, two million children die every
year because they lack access to immunization. Hepatitis B
alone claims a million lives a year but UNICEF Executive
Director, Carol Bellamy, believes the war against
preventable childhood diseases can still be won.
"I think we're starting to win the war in terms of
diseases that can be prevented through immunization through
vaccines. We are facing a big enemy however in things like
HIV/AIDS which is starting to reverse some of the gains
that we've made in the past and the issue of conflict, war
itself, is starting to hurt as well. So the fact is, if
we had a calmer world, we could really move ahead with
these vaccines and we indeed would win the good war rather
than lose the bad war," she said.
Mozambique is one of 25 countries to secure support from
GAVI and the Global Fund. The arrival of the new
vaccines, says Global Fund executive member and former
Mozambican first lady, Graca Machel, is key to creating a
sustainable service throughout the country and shows a
marked commitment from the west to help the not so
fortunate.
"It shows also that among businesses, among people in
different parts of the world, in richer countries, there is
a real and a genuine concern to bring to every child
all over the world everywhere the same opportunity of being
born, grow healthy and to develop properly", Machel said.
GAVI is a coalition of organizations formed in 1999 in
response to stagnating global immunization rates and
widening disparities in vaccines access among
industrialized and developing countries.
