- Story Text: Mogadishu, Somalia -- and a look at the 14-nation East and Central African Summit Conference there, which ended by endorsing the use of violence against South Africa and Calling for the expulsion of Malawi from the organization for becoming "too friendly" with the white minority Government of Pretoria. The film, shot over two days, shows the arrivals of the heads of state and delegates of the 14 nations, and the meeting in progress with speeches from African leaders like President Barre of Somalia and Emperor Selassie of Ethiopia.
SYNOPSIS: Mogadishu, Somalia... the scene of the 14-nation East and Central African Summit conference which ended a few days ago by endorsing the use of violence against South Africa.
Among the heads of state and delegates who were there for the meeting -- the seventh annual gathering of its kind -- were Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and President Marien Ngouabi of the People's Republic of the Congo -- that's Congo-Brazzaville. They were greeted on their arrival at Mogadishu Airport by Somalian President Siad Barre.
The meeting , which ended on Wednesday, was held in the recently completed "Hall of the People", which cost 25-million Somali shillings (about GBP1 1/4-million sterling) and is complete with marble corridors.
The four-day meeting closed after adopting a policy called the "Mogadishu Declaration" -- that's President Nimeiry of the Sudan -- which endorsed a policy of armed struggle against the white minority Government in South Africa.
The declaration... President Nyerere of tanzania... also condemned supporters of dialogue with South Africa, and there was a call for the expulsion of Malawi from the organisation. It failed after some argument, in which President Barre and President Nimeiry were among the leaders who took part.
The Conference also condemned what it called "barbaric and criminal acts of aggression" against Zambia by South Africa, and it pledged all the support that Zambia might ask for. The resolution resulted from allegations earlier this month that South African forces had crossed the Caprivi Strip border into Zambia while pursuing a band of guerrilla fighters.
