- Story Text: INTRO: Reports that the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic may be prepared to resign from office have been the focus of talks in Belgrade as a United States envoy to the region met Serbian leaders.
The Bosnian Serb Prime Minister has confirmed that Karadzic would not contest the elections on September 14.
__________________________________________________________________ United States (U.S.) envoy to Bosnia, John Kornblum, said he was "satisfied" with developments over the political future of Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic after late-night talks in Belgrade on Wednesday (June 26).
A statement from the Serb separatists' capital of Pale said earlier that "President" Karadzic, an indicted war criminal, will not run in Bosnia's elections on September 14.
Kornblum arrived in the Yugoslav capital on Wednesday evening to meet the Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic after discussions in Zagreb with the Croatian President Franjo Tudjman.
"I'm satisfied, and I think that things are moving in the right direction," he told reporters in the early hours of Thursday after long talks with the Serbian leader.
Kornblum gave no further details of the discussions except to say that they "considered all aspects".
Diplomatic sources in Belgrade said they were confident that it was only a matter of days before Karadzic finally surrendered his presidential office.
The man tipped last weekend to take over is the Bosnian Serb's "foreign minister" Aleksa Buha.
In Belgrade, Kornblum said he would fly to Sarajevo on Thursday for further talks with the Moslem-led Bosnian government and Western officials before travelling to the Group of Seven conference in Lyon in France.
The Bosnian Serb prime minister, Gojko Klickovic, said in the northern Bosnian town of Banja Luka on Wednesday that Karadzic would not run in upcoming elections.
Klickovic was speaking after a session of the Bosnian Serb government. He said that Karadzic had bowed to the immense pressure put on him by the international community and Serbia.
Klickovic said Karadzic would stay on as president until the elections, announced for September 14.
