- Story Text: Top Spanish player, Manuel Orantes, playing well below his usual form, still managed an easy win over West German Frank Gebert in the final rounds of the Egyptian Lawn Tennis Championships in Cairo on Wednesday (5 March).
Grantes started off badly, playing a defensive game. But he soon found his range and displayed his brilliant topspin backhand lab ... a tactic that scored him most of his points.
He won in straight sets.
In another match, Egypt's number two Ali El Dawoody cutplayed United States' Doug Crawford 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.
Dawoody using topspin on the forehand, an underspun backhand and a twisting service, was steadier than the American throughout the match. Crawford, however, picked up in the second set and won a tie breaker to win 7-6, but he lost the third set 6-4.
The Egyptian championships, held at the fashionable Gezira Sporting Club, is due to end on Sunday (9 March). It started Friday (28 February).
