- Story Text: Faithful pilgrims of Pope John Paul II continue to
mourn in St Peters Square.
In a show of respect and affection, pilgrims continued
their prayer vigils on Sunday (April 3, 2005) in the St
Peter's Square as the Pope's corpse lay in the Vatican.
Pilgrims used different methods to pay their respects;
a large poster was placed in the square where people wrote
their thoughts and feelings for the pontiff and expressed
their love for him.
Others sang songs and played music, while many set up
monuments full of candles, drawings, letters and
photographs.
Following rosary prayers, a warm but solemn mood
engulfed the worshippers who have come from around the
globe.
Pilgrims have been spending long nights in the square
sleeping on the pavement since the Pope's degenerating
condition was announced.
John Paul died on Saturday (April 2) from heart failure
and septic shock.
Throughout the day more than 150,000 people streamed
into the square for the pontiff who led the world's 1.1
billion Catholics for more than a quarter of a century.
It is expected scores of pilgrims will continue to
flood into Rome from around the world to pay their final
respects as the funeral approaches at the end of the week,
and city authorities continue to make preparations for the
huge influx.
Across the world the outpouring of affection for the Pope has
been overwhelming with vigils being held in dozens of countries.
His body is expected to be transferred to St. Peter's
Basilica at 5.00 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Monday (April 4) for
public viewing and his funeral is set for later in the
week. Cardinals will meet on Monday (April 4) to fix the
timetable for funeral arrangements, with more than 100
world leaders expected to attend the funeral, including
U.S. President George W. Bush.
World leaders hailed John Paul as a force for peace
during his 26-year papacy, while others credited him with a
major role in the fall of the Iron Curtain.
Apart from his battle against communism and quest for
global peace, John Paul will be remembered for his
unswerving defence of traditional Vatican doctrines on
priesthood and sex.
Some Catholics hope the next Pope will be more liberal.
