- Summary: 1. GV PAN Rhodesian TV Building (2 shots) 0.11 2. SV PAN Ian Smith arrives, greeted and walks inside (2 shots) 0.19 3. SCU INT Smith speaking 1.33 SOUND STARTS: "Our hopes...." SOUND ENDS: "...guard everywhere." SMITH: "Our hopes and our wishes are to live in peace with all our neighbours, accepting the established principle that the internal affairs of any country are the business of that country alone and, whether the rest of us approve or not, we have no right to interfere. It is clear that after lying low for so long the terrorists have attempted to co-ordinate their efforts along a wide front and we have evidence indicating that there will be further actions. Last year they were given a warning that unless they stepped up their efforts their funds would be cut off. I wonder if the members of organisations which contribute to these funds are pleased with the results that have been achieved in Rhodesia over the last few weeks. In these circumstance it will still be some time before things return to normal. Meanwhile, we will have to be on our guard, not only in our border areas...but knowing the habits and intentions of terrorists we will have to be on our guard everywhere." In a nationwide broadcast on Thursday (18 January), Rhodesian leader, Ian Smith, had warned that some pretty tough action would have to be taken against those who aided them. Mr. Smith accused outside interests of interfering in Rhodesian affairs and added:
